University Grants Commission conducts National Eligibility Test which acts as a gateway test in our country to start career as Lecturers in Colleges, universities and other Educational institutions. This National Eligibility Test (NET) is being conducted by twice a year. UGC grants Junior Research Fellowship to the NET passed out candidates who are involved in research work in various Universities and Colleges.

In the year 1984 as per the guidelines of Central Government, UGC for the first time introduced the Junior Research Fellowship program as a basic qualification to conduct researches in Institutions & Universities. The National Educational Testing Bureau of UGC is supervising the NET.

The National Eligibility Test (NET), also known as UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET, is a test to determine eligibility for college and university level lecturership and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals. It aims to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in teaching professions and research. On behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the test for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in Indian universities and colleges.

The Council of Scientist and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for other Science Subject namely Chemical Science , Mathematical Science , Life Science , Physical Science and Earth Atmospheric Ocean , Planetary Science jointly with the UGC. The Examination are performed twice in a year generally in the months of June and December .
